Scissor Talk

Updated: Nov 30, 2024

Most of the sewing magic that ensues in my studio is completed by young sewists. With that being said, my scissors get A LOT of use and even more "not-so-gentle" use. Kids need scissors that are strong enough to cut through fabric easily yet don't

require adult strength to open and close. In other words, kids need scissors that can cut through just about anything easily, and scissors they can operate without their hands getting overly tired.

When it comes to scissors, I have two favorites, and I use them regularly in my studio.

Kai 8" Dressmaking Shears

Pros: Sturdy and somewhat lightweight

Nice clean cuts

Does not dull super quick

Very satisfying to cut with

Great price point

They offer left handed shears as well

Cons: They dull quickly when cutting fusible fleece (most shears do)

Overall Score:10/10

Gingher 8" Featherweight scissors

Pros: Lightweight

Easy to open and close for kids

Very durable and don't break when dropped

Great price-point

Cons: Quality has decreased over the years and they dull quicker than they used to

Slightly bulky where the blades cut because of the plastic that lines the blades

Overall Score: 7/10

I used to give them a 10 out of 10, but the quality has decreased over the past few years thus bringing my rating slightly down. Even with the decreased durability, I still love to use them with my young sewists.

Gingher 8" Lightweight Bent Trimmers

Pros: Somewhat lightweight, yet sturdy feel

Nice clean cuts

Easy to open and close

Great price-point

Satisfying to cut with (when they are sharp)

Cons: Temperamental - they dull much quicker than I'd like

Overall Score: 7/10

While I LOVE the satisfaction of cutting with these scissors, they don't hold up well to everyday kid use. These scissors are best for teen sewists and older, as they generally understand proper scissor care and use by that age.

Overall

Overall, I prefer the Kai 8" Dressmakers Shears for my sewists who range in age from 7-18. Both small and adult sized hands can easily use them.
